The Handoff Rules for a personal AI agent

What to give an agent like Meta's Muse, and what to keep. Works for any agent that holds standing permissions.

1. Sort every errand into a bucket

AHand over

Reading, lookups, summaries, drafts you send yourself, lists and plans.

BHand over, approve each time

Anything that sends, books, buys, posts or fills in a form.

CKeep

Moving or spending money. Offers. Messages to people who matter. Your address, location, health, anything about your kids. Work accounts.

DNot yet

Anything where you can't describe the worst case in one sentence.

2. Before any approval wider than once

Finish this sentence out loud:

"This lets the agent ___ without asking me again, including when ___."

Never tap "Always allow" on anything that spends your money or speaks in your name.

Prefer allow once or allow for this task. Reads and harmless lookups can go wider.

3. Set it to ask. One errand at a time.

  1. First two weeks: the strictest ask setting your version has. On Meta's help page, "Always ask" checks with you before any action. For connected apps, "Ask for some actions" checks before every write action and important reads.
  2. One errand from bucket A for a week. Read what it did. Add the next one after a week with no surprises.
  3. Start boring. Summarize a long thread, or compare two products.

4. Ten-minute weekly check

  1. Open the permissions screen. On Meta's help page the path is Settings, then Permissions. Pick Connectors to see each connected app.
  2. Read what each connected app is allowed to do.
  3. Revoke anything you don't remember granting.
  4. Open the Activity log. Meta's help page says you get there by tapping your assistant icon. Sort each surprise into a bucket.
  5. After a surprise, move that errand one bucket toward Keep. Move it toward Hand over only after two clean weeks.

Why this works: a permission is granted in the system's units and understood in yours. Meta's help page says always allow lets Muse take "this type of action" from then on without asking. You were probably thinking of one buyer at one price. The gap between the two is reach nobody knew they gave.

Meta's help page says you're responsible for guiding Muse and for fixing its errors, including with other services and the people it contacts. The full article: whatisaframework.com/muse-agent-rules.
